The U16 girls lined out against a formidable St Marys team this evening in what could easily be described as the game of the season for our girls so far.
The first half started out neck and neck with some early points from St Mary’s quickly followed by goal from St. Johns to counteract them. It was a tough battle with neither team willing to concede any ground to the other with some fine goal scoring chances from St Mary’s denied due to a determined defensive back line backed up by a keeper not willing to give an inch.
After the half time break, St Johns started into the second half with a lead of four points, but a regrouped and focused St Mary’s swung the game and reversed the margin in their favour after ten minutes. It was a hard fought battle from both sides, and things were looking bleak for St Johns when a penalty was awarded against them midway through the second half. However a spectacular save by the keeper boosted the spirits of the girls, and they quickly responded with 3 goals in three minutes from a brilliant forward line backed all the way down to the half backs on the field.
It was an action packed game, but ultimately St Johns came out victorious in a game that will quite possibly be remembered as the battle of the season.
Our next and final league match is on the 15th May away to Shamrock Gaels.
